Not everyone can receive the services of lap surgery. The lap band system does go by specific requirements. There is such thing as a good and bad candidtae for this adjustable band.

To know if you are a good candidate for the lap band surgery, consider calculating your BMI, body mass index. On the BMI chart, less than 18.5 BMI is considered underweight. Between 18.5 and 24.9 BMI is normaly weight and 25 to 29.9 BMI is considered overweight. Obese is 30 to 34.9 BMI. Severely obese is between 35 and 39.9 BMI, while morbidly obese is considered 40 and above BMI. To be a qualified candidate for the lap band system surgery is to have a body mass index 40 or above. Another factor could be if you currently weight twice your ideal weight or 100 pounds over your ideal weight.

Have you tried to lose weight before by going on diets and have little or no sucess? This could help you become a good candidate for this surgery. If you have been overweight for more than several years can be a good factor as well. Surgeons pay attention to good and bad candidates.

Candidates without the factors leading to a successful procedure are usually not taken. Usually, candidates are adults over the age of 18 with a body mass index of at least 40 for the lap band system surgery. If you have a health condition that has caused your significant weight gain and have a BMI of at least 35 then you may be considered a candidate.

There are many factors in determining if you are a good candidate for lap surgery. It is a procedure that is done to help lose weight due to health risks not because you think you are not small enough or beautiful. See your doctor and allow them to determine you as a candidate or not for the lap band surgery.
