We play it just right, making all the bets we should, using our probability and hand strength to make good decisions, and yet we still end up losing the hand. We call it the suckout, being run down, our opponent catching a card on the river. Whatever you call it, it’s a bad beat.

You can think of bad beats this way, it’s a hand you should have won but didn’t because of some unlucky twist of fate.

And contrary to popular belief, it happens a lot in the world of poker. A whole lot, especially with new players and less experienced players.

He turns over AK. River comes, A. He rakes the pot with this Aces Full beating your trip kings. And in this case, there was nothing particularly bad about your play. Both of you had a strong hand, his just ended up triumphant at the end of the day. It was a bad beat.

In August of 2004 I accepted a coaching position with the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society’s team in training (T’NT). I was to teach a group of people from all walks of life how to train to run or walk a marathon (26.2 miles). The task was challenging and daunting. Some of these people had not even jogged around the block…….where do I start?

Besides the training, these people took on the challenge of raising close to $5,000.00 a piece for Leukemia/Lymphoma research.

As I look back over those 4 months I saw confident athletes emerge from the 37 members of the team. I had 5 athletes that trained for and finished the Seattle Marathon on November 28th. Nine of our team went to Hawaii to race in the Honolulu Marathon on December 12th and the remainder (22) of the team went to Arizona to participate in the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n Roll Marathon on January 9, 2005.

There were months of intense training that this incredible group of people endured. They racked up mile after mile weekly so they would be prepared when the big day arrived. They trained outside on the Coastal Trail through October and then switched inside to the track at the Tesoro Sports Center.

The training paid off and the times that were turned in for the Events were very respectable. There was one runner who was trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon by running the Honolulu Marathon in under 4 hours.

I have gotten several emails and lots of pictures from the Honolulu team recounting their experiences. The weather cooperated and nobody reported blisters. Everyone finished. That is the goal. Quitting is not an option. When a runner feels a bit defeated he only has to think about what the kids with Leukemia and other blood related cancers go through, then the marathon seems like a cakewalk.

I have been a Fitness Coach for almost 20 years and I can say that this experience was one that I will not soon forget! I feel blessed that I was presented with this opportunity to work with all these wonderful, caring and committed people.

When choosing CRM software for your small business, it is critical that you understand the difference between Contact Centric CRM and Account Centric CRM. This is one of the biggest mistakes companies make when choosing CRM.

There are two basic paradigms for CRM systems: Contact centric or Account Centric. In Contact Centric systems, the primary organization is around independent contacts. In Account Centric systems, there are two levels to the basic organization: a company or account layer to which multiple contacts can be related.

CONTACT CENTRIC

In a contact centric system, the database is organized around individual contacts. So, if you have dealings with 3 different people all from the same company, you would have 3 different contact records and in each record would be the company name.

There may be ways to relate different contacts together, but these will be in the “workaround” class.

A Contact centric organization makes sense if you are dealing with individuals and you do not need to do such things as look at an organization’s combined history. It is very difficult/clumsy to track company related information separately from contact information. For example, if you want to track information about a company (e.g. sic code, # employees, annual budget, etc.) separately from contact related information (e.g. favourite hobby, home phone number, spouse’s name, etc.). there isn’t an easy way to do that:

- Under which contact do you store the company information,

- Which contact becomes the primary record,

- Do you store the information under both contacts…which makes updating difficult.

- Do you create a “contact” record to serve as the company record and somehow relate the contacts to it?

ACCOUNT CENTRIC

Account centric CRM systems have a layer above contact, the organization or account, that can tie multiple contacts together. This has the advantage of being able to track company-related information entirely separately from contact-related information. This approach is usually easier to:

- See all opportunities for an account/company.

- See combined history.

- Do address updates.

- See the organization and all its contacts in one view.

- Report on company vs. individuals easier.

MY RECOMMENDATION

If you’re working in an industry where you only need one contact record per account, you may want the simplicity of contact centric. However, if you are going to want to track multiple contacts per account then contact vs. account centric becomes a very important consideration and you should give heavy weighting to systems that are truly account centric.

This first article explores Version History, a service that can be provided in groupware in order to simplify version tracking.

What is Groupware?

I have already mentioned that groupware helps businesses meet their collaborative needs, but groupware is not simply software used by businesses to organize documents and their drafts. Groupware deals specifically with the ad hoc nature of much of the document collaboration in today’s fast-paced business. But, in order to provide the document tracking and management necessary to run effective document collaboration, even in an ad hoc setting, groupware must have the ability to track documents and their versions across multiple email boxes, hard drives, and servers.

What does Version History do for Groupware?

Version History utilizes Digital Thread technology to complete its tracking across email boxes, hard drives, and servers. The Digital Thread inserts tracking code into the meta data of any Word, PowerPoint, or Excel document and keeps track of the who, what, when, where, and how of each change made, even with multiple users. The information is literally threaded together like beads on a string, and displayed in a flow chart through the Version History option.

As deadlines draw near and it comes time to merge the document changes, questions will inevitably arise as to who made certain changes and why. Using Version History as a reference, users know exactly who to ask. The questions left in the wake of ad hoc document collaboration are gathered together and sorted out by Version History until all businesses see in front of them are answers.
