Recruiting on the Internet and the future of recruiting software

Recruiting has changed significantly in the last 25 years. The primary vehicle of change has been the Internet. Other driving factors are business changes and technological changes not necessarily related to the Internet. I also think we have a different type of recruiter than we did even 10 years ago.

In today’s world it is all about speed and how quickly a company can adapt to change. The professionals sought by successful businesses need to be found quickly and they need to be productive almost overnight. This adaptation to almost instant productivity expected of a new employee requires a high degree of specialization to a very specific area of expertise. Therefore, the recruiter needs a very fast way of finding professionals with the exact type of skills. It wasn’t too long ago when an employer just needed an accountant with experience in the retail industry.

Today the employer needs an accountant with retail experience, plus experience in foreign markets, exchange rates, tariffs and knowledge of specific branded automated accounting systems.

There is no time to bring the new person up to speed.

So, the pieces of the big global economic engine are becoming more sophisticated, more minute, more specialized and more interchangeable.

Now I finally get to my point. What can I bring to the table via recruiting software that will give our recruiting customers the speed and accuracy they need to find or attract these people who are becoming more and more specialized into fewer macro groups and greater micro groups?

I have looked into my rather foggy crystal ball and saw that recruiting firms with an active functioning web site might be the way of the future. I am not talking about the web sites I see today which just simply talk about what a great recruiting firm they are and provide “x” number of reasons why they can help someone’s career. Some may even post jobs and accept applications and resumes via their web site. I see recruiting web sites of the future being content driven to areas of minute specialization; i.e. not just doctors but neurosurgeons specializing in spectrography, not just commercial pilots but helicopter pilots, not just web masters but web masters with PHP and video marketing.

For right know, let us simply call this web site for recruiters an exchange where candidates of very specific skills and needs are drawn. A key emphasis of the exchange is the ability to quickly isolate very specialized and specific skills. If I know my customer base, the exchange will have to be highly customizable for each recruiting firm. Both candidates and clients will have to have the ability to interact with their own information. A lot of the information will need to be confidential and highly secure. But above all, this one to one interaction between candidate and client will be monitored by the recruiter. Wow, has the recruiter’s job changed or what!

These web sites of the future will not simply be job boards like Monster, Career Builder or Dice. These exchanges will be run and operated by people with the knowledge of very specialized skills.

The biggest change I see coming however is the ability of recruiters to market and the means with which they market to their customers and candidates. Currently this marketing is typically in the form of newsletters, emails and phone calls. The recruiting firms of the future will learn how to market through their web sites via recruiting software. No longer will the recruiter be the “headhunter”. The recruiter of the future will need to draw these people of infinite specialties to them because they will not just be found.

Right now if a candidate was to search for a position with a specific skill in Google, I’m willing to bet that not one recruiting firm would come up on the 1st page. This will change as recruiting firms learn how to add value to their web site, not just in the form of bringing employer and employee together but by offering information valuable to the specific industry; salary, latest news, trends, continuing education, etc.

I believe above all else that there is one aspect of the recruiting industry that will not change. It will always be a cottage industry of firms averaging from 1 to 5 people. One to five people can never track the geometrical growth and infinite expansion of skills. The capitol required for recruiting startup is so small that no one recruiting firm can ever become a Google, Microsoft or Yahoo. It is too easy for a startup to out compete a giant conglomerate recruiting firm in a specific area with little or no capitol investment. It will be even easier with good recruiting software.

Microsoft Dynamics GP: Auto Dealership Implementation

Microsoft Dynamics GP, or Microsoft Great Plains is very popular mid-market generic ERP. It can be used as ERP platform for multiple vertical markets. In this small article we’ll describe typical auto dealership network automation.

Worldwide automaker has dealers across the USA and Canada and in their case they had Great Plains Dynamics 6.0 on MS SQL Server/MSDE. Each dealer is independent enterprise, so each has its own Great Plains license

• Dealership proprietary software. Dealership is traditional business and it had several generations of computer business systems. Customer info, associated with the car and VIN, work done for the car, parts, associated with the specific model, works pricelist and technician availability - this information is stored in DOS based business management system.

• Microsoft Dynamics GP - accounting back end. Each transaction financial information goes to be stored in Great Plains Standard. Natural choice to use standard accounting application as the backend - it can handle US and Canadian dollars variation, plus it can handle sales tax (USA) and VAT/GST (Canada, Australia, New Zealand)

• Financial Reporting. Microsoft Great Plains has FRx financial reporting: Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss (P&L), Cash Flow Statement - all these reports should be coming from standard accounting package, such as Microsoft Dynamics GP.

• Integration Technology. Great Plains Dynamics 6.0 had legacy VBA/Modifier integration, using ADO to connect to dealership proprietary database and integrate with it. For version 8.0 we recommended eConnect in combination with direct MS SQL Server stored procedures integration (eConnect has certain issues, dealing with multicurrency and other nuances). As we move to Microsoft Dynamics GP (or Microsoft Great Plains Standard 9.0) - the accent will be changed to Object Integration SDK (eConnect with XML web services connectors, so we can deploy Visual Studio.Net C# or VB, however the need for the SQL stored procedures should be expected).

• Future Directions. Auto dealership is very conservative business. It will be tending to skip one or two versions upgrade, as we have in this case: client skipped upgrade from Great Plains Dynamics 6.0 to Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics 7.0 and Great Plains Standard 7.5. Current plan is to upgrade GP Dynamics 6.0 to Microsoft Great Plains 8.0 and then in 2007 or 2008 GP 8.0 to Microsoft Dynamics GP 10

Microsoft Word: Business Writing 3; 8 Tips To Save More Time

Direct Response Business writing is different to ordinary business writing, which is why I decided to share this mini series of tips for stopping the hair-tearing frustration when working with Microsoft Word.

These 8 tips share insights to how to get your page looking exactly the way you want it to…

1) Start a new page by pressing Ctrl + Enter not by pressing the enter key until Word starts a new page for you. Doing it this way means that any additional text you add before your page break does not push your text further down the next page.

2) Add a border to your page when creating an Order Form (See my article: Direct Mail Campaigns: 10 Rules to Creating Your Magnetic, Irresistible Order Form).

From the menu: Format, Borders and Shading. On the Page Border tab explore the Art options in the Style section.

3) Use leader tabs to make it easier to read columns of tabbed text. A ‘leader tab’ enters a dotted, dashed or continuous line leading up to the tabbed position.

From the menu: Format, select Tabs, type a position for the tab and choose a Leader style.

4) Create the underlines on an order form using an underlining leader tab. See the previous tip.

5) Balance the gap between a page border and the text:

From the menu: Format, Borders and Shading. On the Page Border tab use the Options button to set the Margins and the ‘Measure from’ setting.

6) Balance columns of text on a page. Insert a continuous section break at the end of the last column of text:

From the menu: Insert, Break, Section and then Continuous.

7) Add page Numbers. From the menu: Insert, Page Numbers. Select the style and position you want.

8) Set the page numbering to start at 1.

In books or reports, where you have a table of contents at the beginning, you may want to start the page numbering on the first page following the contents page.

First you must have a section break:

From the menu: Insert, Break, Section and choose Next Page.

On the page where you want to restart the page numbering:

From the menu: Insert, Page Numbers, Format. Select Start at. Click OK, THEN Click on CLOSE. If you click OK you may upset any headers/footers you have created

Bonus Tip: If you are creating a form using the tables feature in Word and want the table to be as close to the bottom of the page as possible, you get a blank page following the one containing your table. This is because a table always has an empty line following it and, because there’s no room on that page, it automatically creates another.

You can get rid of the page very easily, Click to the left of the empty line at the top of the empty page. You get a black box where you’ve selected the invisible paragraph marker.

Click on the font size box, type the figure 2 in the box and press the enter key. The font is set so tiny that it fits on the page under the table and the ‘empty page’ disappears.
